AN INVITATION TO WEEP
AN INVITATION TO WEEP
John 11:33–35 (NIV): 33 When Jesus saw her (Mary) weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.
34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they replied.
35 Jesus wept. (lamented)
Luke 19:41–44 (NIV):
41 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it
WEPT - δακρύω dakryō
to weep; shed tears; with tears; to weep for; to flood (ugly cry) ; to be tearful; be all in tears; lament; to be wept for
1) JESUS CHRIST WAS REALLY AND TRULY MAN
John 1:1–5 (NIV):
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.
5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
2) HONEST GRIEF = LAMENT
Psalm 38:9-11, “All my longings lie open before you, Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you. My heart pounds, my strength fails me; even the light has gone from my eyes. My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds; my neighbors stay far away.”
Psalm 130:1, “Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice!”
Psalm 6:3 “My soul is in deep anguish. How long, Lord, how long?”
3) JESUS TAKES HIS GRIEF AND TURNS IT INTO ABUNDANCE
John 11:21–26 (NIV):
21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
Psalm 42:7, “Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.”
